Three Months before you reach 65 years of age, your birth month and for three months thereafter is the initial enrollment period for people reaching the age of 65, Individuals with a permanent disability or those with end stage renal failure can be eligible prior to that time, During that open enrollment period you will determine whether you will sign up for Part B, Part D, Medigap Plans or an Medicare Advantage Plan.
In order to make changes to Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans or add Parts B and D to traditional Medicare there are two Open Enrollment Periods. One is from October 7th until Dec 15 and the other from January !st to March 31st each year.
During this time each year you are allowed without penalty to switch from Traditional Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan or switch back to Traditional Medicare from an Advantage Plan. You may add a drug plan and most other options./p>
During this period you may change from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another, switch from traditional Medicare to an Advantage Plan but you may not switch back to Traditional Medicare or add a drug plan without penalty.
Certain life changing events may allow you the opportunity to make changes in your Medicare health coverage.
A job loss, death or divorce, returning to the country after living abroad are just some of them. That period extends for some months following such an event.
